Illinois Tollway exploring mobile payment system

Just when you thought there was an app for everything, Illinois Tollway announces they are going to test out a new toll system that uses your smartphone.

Illinois Tollway approved a $2.7 million project to create a “living laboratory”. The test zone will be located on the southbound portion of Tri-State tollway just past the Touhy Avenue IPass lanes. The arch will read, “Test Zone No Tolls Taken”.

According to a press release issued Wednesday, smartphone tolling apps and IPass transponders that automatically confirm payments are among the new technology that Illinois Tollway will be exploring . If Illinois Tollway does go the app route, the app may be used to access the phone’s GPS function to confirm distance and locations traveled.

Testing is expected to begin in early 2015.
